The Okinjyo doll, a hidden gem from Kumamoto, Japan! Made from paulownia wood, this doll's base takes inspiration from the traditional Kokeshi doll.

Tetsujiro Kuwahara, the third-generation owner of the bamboo and wooden crafting company carves each doll out of solid paulownia wood.

Let me share a little story with you,,, even though it almost sounds like a complaint! I had such a hard time contacting Tetsujiro, as he never checked his emails or picked up my international phone calls. So, I took a chance during my trip to Kumamoto this spring and dropped by his town unannounced, and I finally got to meet him! This doll is truly a rare find, usually seen only in local folkcraft museums. I haven't even come across them in my hometown! With a personal connection to my grandmother, who owned one, I wanted to bring this adorable Okinjyo doll to share it with all of you in the United States.

Living in a charming, nostalgic hot spring town outside of Kumamoto city, Tetsujiro sold me two of these Okinjyo dolls without prior ordering. I've unfortunately lost touch with him again since then..but I'll try my luck next year by visiting him once more without any prior contact! I’m sure he’s still there! Wish me luck for next year, as I hope to bring more of these Okinjyo dolls to my website...!
