Onta Kiln - Condiment jar


The tiny jar comes with hand carved wooden scooper!

It's been more than 10 years since I visited the Onta pottery village. It was hard to choose what to bring back because every family has different touch!

Each piece is handmade by Mr. Kobukuro in Oita, Japan and varies slightly, making each piece unique.

It  has been said the Onta Kilns had started more than 300 years ago and there are 9 kilns (used to be more) in the small Onta village.  They have continued to use the traditional methods, digging up clay in the local mountains and the clay pounded for 20 to 30 days into powder. A wooden hammer powered hydraulically by the river that runs through the village known as “Karausu” is used.

The production of Onta wares has been passed through the generations. Each potter has been trained by their own father since they don’t allow anyone from outside of the village nor their families to be trained in the art of Onta ware. The 9 kilns work together to protect the traditions of Onta wares.

Natural ingredients such as straw, ash, wood, copper, and iron are used to create the various types of glazes that will be used to coat the clay.
