Tetsuji Kuwahara - Kokeshi doll "Okinjyo"
Crafted from solid paulownia wood, the Okinjyo doll is inspired by traditional Kokeshi dolls. Each piece is skillfully carved by Tetsujiro Kuwahara, the third-generation owner of a bamboo and wooden crafting company.
I have a little story to share—almost a comical complaint! I had a tough time reaching Tetsujiro, as he rarely checked his emails or answered my international calls. So, during my trip to Kumamoto this spring, I decided to drop by his town unannounced. To my delight, I finally got to meet him!
This rare doll is typically found only in local folkcraft museums. With a personal connection to my grandmother, who owned one, I wanted to bring the Okinjyo doll to share with you in the U.S.
