The Story Behind “Ita-zumo” (Board Sumo)

This wooden sumo game carries the story of a legendary hometown wrestler, Utarō Shimagasaki, from the Tenpō era (1830–1844). Known for his unmatched strength in Higo Province, he set out to challenge the great yokozuna of Edo—but tragically never made it. “Ita-zumo” was created to honor his spirit, turning his legacy into a playful board game that’s still enjoyed today. A piece of history you can hold in your hands.
