Not the most fun update today, but I felt it was important to share something close to my heart.
Last fall, we lost Miyawaki-san, the artist behind the sweet, whimsical clay dolls you may have seen in the online store or at pop-up events. He always greeted me with a warm smile, and his dolls truly felt like the reflections of his gentle spirit.
I remember my last visit with him in spring of last year—I brought a box of See’s Candies (yes, why not!) because he’d mentioned wanting to try “something sweet and very American.” He beamed when I handed him the box, clutching it like a treasure. He asked when I’d be back, and I said, “next year.” He gave my hand a strong shake and smiled bigger than ever. It felt like a meaningful goodbye.
The dolls I brought home from that trip have felt extra special. I’ve held onto them until now, but I think it’s time to share them—with people who will find joy and comfort in them, the way I have.
Thank you for letting me share this memory.
Miyawaki-san’s spirit will live on in each doll, and I hope they bring a little of that peace into your life.
